Story Adaptation;

This story is an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel 'of Mice and Men'. The story has been adapted into a Norse or 'Viking' saga which tells the story of two Norsemen struggling to survive during a time in history which has been called 'the Viking age'.

Plot Overview;

The story begins in a Norse hunting encampment in the evening following a long and fruitful day of hunting. The All Father while trying to explain to a younger Norseman why one should be grateful for what one has decides to tell the entire gathering a saga. It is intended to try and help the younger man understand what it means to struggle through life trying to gain your own land. To live off the fat of that land and be happy with what you have. The All Father tells them the saga of Jorge and Lemmy. A saga of Vermin and Vikings.

Jorge is a small, dark man with “sharp, strong features.” Lemmy, his companion, is his opposite, a giant of a man with a “shapeless” face. These two men have been striving to achieve their own farm to call their own so they may live off the fat of the land. Lemmy is excited about the prospect of tending rabbits on the farm and is easily distracted. They are involved in a Viking raid on an Irish monastery to help bring this about. During the raid Lemmy under Jorge’s direction successfully kills one of the monks fleeing with the treasure of gold from the monastery. Halfdan is the raiding party leader. Olaf is the second born son and brother to Halfdan. He wears red armor to distinguish himself on the battle field and bring fear to the hearts of his enemies. He befriended Lemmy during the voyage to raid the monastery and is accidently killed by Lemmy during the Viking raid on the Irish monastery. Halfdan excepts both Jorge and Lemmy's portion of the plunder as payment for the killing of his brother. Snori, another Norse warrior, gives Jorge the bible after they have stripped it of the gold, silver and jewels. He tells Jorge it will help him see over the side of the ship while seated on his rowing bench.

When they reach land in Nidaros Lemmy immediately hands Jorge the golden cross in front of the entire raiding party. The raiding party move to kill Lemmy and Jorge. Jorge again manages to talk them out of it. Halfdan makes them forfeit all their weapons, the cross and allows them to leave with only the clothes on their back and the bible Jorge was given by Snori. Halfdan gives Jorge a token of his family to show to Egill, a family friend who owns a farmstead not far away.

Jorge and Lemmy are off on a quest to find their way in the world and achieve the goal of having a farmstead of their own where they may live off the fat of the land. They begin this quest and find the waters not as calm as Jorge would've liked. Their goal seems close and is quickly snatched away by events beyond their control.
